“And then Damon…beautiful, damaged Damon…started listing all of his faults — everything he’s been accused of, everything he believes about himself: “I’m not the good guy. I’m selfish. I take what I want. I do what I want. I lie to my brother. I fall in love with his girl. I don’t do the right thing.” And there, right there, summed up in that short description is the antithesis of who Damon really is. At least who he is since falling in love with Elena, and I would argue who he has always been at his core. Because, he’s proven time and time again that he isn’t selfish with her or Stefan. He’s had plenty of opportunities to ‘take’ (advantage of) her, but has consistently been honorable in that respect. Doing what he wants? That goes out the window every single time her needs/wants outweigh his. Lying to his brother? He had the perfect opportunity to do that on many occasions, but specifically with this episode and the blood bag. He could have easily gone back to Stefan, shrugged and said he knew he was right, that Elena wasn’t sired and played the sire bond for all it was worth. Falling in love with Elena was so out of his control that it should never even be put on a list like that. But the final one? “I don’t do the right thing” was so beautifully answered by Elena, it makes my heart hurt. To me, it was so much more than just the two of them being in love and how they make each other happy. It goes to the core of who they have become because of each other. When she puts his hand over her heart, she, in essence is echoing what she said the entire episode, “Because of you, I’m alive (physically and metaphorically). Because of you, I have changed. Saving me, changing me so I can live a full, happy life … was that wrong of you to do?” Similarly, when she puts her hand on his face, she’s saying “You have changed. Because you let me in, you let me touch your life. You’re becoming your best self because of it. Was letting me into your heart wrong of you to do?” Damon couldn’t answer yes to either of those questions. Because who Damon and Elena are together is so much better than either of them alone. And so much more than either of them with other people.”
